The Centre is a registered charity, founded in 1973, which treats patients of all ages suffering from a range of illnesses and disabilities, both short- and long-term. These include cerebral palsy, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, multiple sclerosis, and also post-operative physiotherapy, back problems and shorter-term injuries such as whiplash from road traffic accidents. Patients are referred to the Centre by GPs and consultants, or can refer themselves on a ‘walk in’ basis. All new patients receive a full initial assessment by a senior physiotherapist before treatment begins.
Some of our patients will never recover (such as those with severe cerebral palsy from birth or injury, or who are quadriplegic), while others will return to full health and independence relatively quickly. For all, our aim is to alleviate pain and suffering, to improve quality of life, and increase independence of living as far as possible.
We provide a welcoming and no n-formal environment for all patients and their carers who can take a break during treatment. We received National Lottery Funding for our welcoming and spacious patient reception area extension built in 2005. All the staff here are very conscious of carers’ needs for peace and quiet, and also for company and someone to talk to. Refreshments are provided and we sell cards, books and produce made by patients and staff, as this is a service which those with limited mobility for access to shops find useful. We also run an on-line ordering service for patients buying medical equipment and aids.
